Tyer Profile
I live in the Scottish Borders and have been passionate about fly fishing for years. I started fishing young when my grandfather showed me how to cast a line and occasionally catch fish. Forty years later I'm still trying hard and learning every day!
I've fished for trout on the fly for years but moved to take up salmon fishing seriously in the last three years after dabbling occasionally when I lived in Sutherland in the North of Scotland. I fish the Tweed every month of the season for salmon or sea trout on a local beat and travel at least five times a year to fish all over. I love wild fishing in remote stretches for trout and will fish anywhere for salmon given half the chance! I was very fortunate to have a good friend who showed me the finer points |
of casting double hand rods. Since then I've never looked back and have been fortunate enough to practice weekly to enable me to help others increase their chances of covering fish under many different conditions.
To complement my fishing, I decided to tie flies after discovering that whilst fishing with others and actually witnessing them catching salmon on your own creations was even more rewarding than being blessed enough to just catch one of these mighty fish yourself.
I am also passionate about conservation of the king of fish, the Atlantic Salmon. There have been many developments in this area and I welcome these and support the amazing work of those such as Orri Vigfùsson. Once they're gone, they're gone!
My "thing" when tying salmon flies is definitely the use of modern products used in other types of flies. But I almost always use Zonker strips in my salmon flies! I've never tied at a fly tying fair before and really look forward to meeting as many people as possible to hopefully share some of my flies and also learn from them along the way.
