`Having taken up fly fishing about 35 years ago, I decided to tie my own flies from the outset. Prior to this, being brought up just outside Blackpool I fished local ponds during the Summer and in the winter months I enjoyed sea fishing.
Occasionally I went trout fishing with my late father, firstly with the worm and quill minnow later with bubble float and a team of flies.
Moving later to the Ribble Valley I began fishing the rivers Ribble and Hodder near Clitheroe, I gradually ventured further afield and began fishing throughout the north of England, and at times fished various locations in Scotland, including the isles, and on occasion I have enjoyed fishing in Ireland.
In the beginning I only tied trout flies, but having taken lessons from Steve Riding in Preston, I began tying salmon and sea trout flies and later flies for grayling.
What started as a hobby became an obsession that continues to this day!, and I still tie flies most days and try to fish at least once a week throughout the year, and in the winter I enjoy trotting for grayling and chub and the occasional barbel.
I started tying flies for myself and my father, but gradually friends and their associates approached me to tie flies for them, and has continued to this day, although I do own a small website where I specialise in bespoke salmon and sea trout flies. This has led to to orders for clients taking fishing trips to the Kola peninsular, Iceland and Alaska.
One of my other passions is North country wet flies, which I also tie to order. I often use these flies for trout fishing in the spring and again in the autumn for grayling fishing them traditionally when conditions allow.
